Are we really INDEPENDENT ?

I was thinking about myself as to who am I ? When I self-introspective a bit,  I realised that like every individual I am a person who loves independence. But when I actually looked outside, I found that this independence is a figment of our imagination. One question that came to my mind was that even after several years of independence, are we really Independent ?

During the formative years, I was under the guidance of my parents and was totally dependent on them. Their influenced has made me what I am today ! When I grew up and went to school, I was bounded by the rules and regulations. The same was applicable even for the college. At every point of time, I remember the quote, “Man is born free but lives in chains”. That time people used to say that all this will be helpful to me in becoming a good citizen and once I become an adult, I will be free and can live my life independently.

On my 18th birthday, I was very excited that now I will be independent and will make a new world of my own, making all my decisions independently. But, was this really possible ? Soon my dreams were dashed to the ground. All that was around me was blood and more blood ! Every sight caused me immense pain and every time I questioned myself, are we independent ?

Although we’ve fought for independence but still we are dependent much more than what we were before. I found the society to be very conservative, in reality it is not at all independent. Whatever I did, I was imposed to follow certain ethics and norms in life. The thought of doing something was always followed by the thought as to how the society would perceive me, my actions and my thinking. I just couldn’t do whatever I want because that can harm others mentally and physically thus making it rather difficult for me to take independent decisions. Every action or decision was bounded by the perception of the society.

We can never be completely independent as long as we live in a society. In order to be really independent, one should have the right to live their lives in the way they want. The society is surrounded by corruption and corrupt politicians. People are killing each other for no reason. Crime rates have increased and people are no longer feeling safe. Soon I realized that everything was not as good as I thought it to be, forget about being united and independent, even relationships aren’t valued anymore. People are ready to sell their families for the sake of money or even go to the extent of killing them for their own needs. Although people say that the nation is free from slavery but still, it exists in different forms. Out of which, the problem of child labor is very severe, children are abused and  forced to beg.

The society is also facing the problem of unemployment. People are dying of hunger as they can’t even afford 2 meals a day. Due to lack of education, women have been the most affected and been going through all the suffering and pain. They have been never considered at par with men, always been looked down upon.

Even today, bribery is still in existence. Everyone is aware of the fact that practising of dowry is bad and not right but still, it is widely accepted and followed at all levels.

We call ourselves independent and educated, then why can’t we break this conservatism ? We are still much dependent on the political system which keeps people illiterate so that votes can be controlled easily. We need to depend on one another for our needs !
Each one of us has been living a misleading way of life, where our likes and dislikes did not make any sense and had no existence in the real independent world. It’s high time we realize that each individual is a unique piece of art and must be given their birthright i.e. the Right to Live, the way they want.
Was this the independence that I had been searching for ? Was this the independence for which the freedom fighters gave their lives ? Even after 65 years of independence, are we really independent ?

An interview with one of India's youngest CEO who wants to retire at 25 years

There are a number of school dropouts, who have made it big and have been successful in their venture. Some of the best dropout examples are Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Richard Branson etc. There is one thing common among all these people – they followed their dream.

On the same lines, Kunwar Prithvi Singh Chauhan dropped out of school in XIIth standard and followed his dream. His hard work helped him in becoming one of India's youngest CEO. He is just 18 years old. Though, Kunwar has had his fair of struggle, but he has overcome all obstacles and wants to take his company, Anamika Infotech Private Limited to higher levels.

Ashim Sunam (AS): You were born in Rajasthan. But what made you shift to Bangalore after the Xth standard?

Kunwar Prithvi Singh Chauhan (KP): Bangalore was always a dream city for me. From the time I started working, I wanted to be here. I knew, Bangalore being the IT city of India was the only city, which could provide me the kind of exposure I wanted, the kind of environment I wanted and the kind of future I wanted as well.

AS: Being an avid blogger helped you attain such a prestigious position. Could you talk about your journey from your first blog to Anamika Infotech Private Limited?

KP: The journey has been awesome. I learned a number of things. Being a blogger gives you the ability to express the same thought in 1000 and 10 words at the same time. Blogging also makes you research the Internet for various things and that makes you learn a lot of new stuff.

AS: What developed your interest in blogging?

KP: When I was a kid, I wanted to be a money man. There was a day when I read an article in a newspaper about a blog and how anyone could make money with a blog. Well, that day I decided to have a blog, experiment with it and earn money.

AS: You are one of the youngest CEO in India. Did you ever dream of being a CEO?

KP: Well, yes. Ever since the time I started working, I had a dream of being a CEO. Being listed a one of the youngest CEOs in the country is always a proud thing.

AS: Where does your company, Anamika Infotech Private Limited stand now? Are you happy with the company's journey?

KP: Yes. It has been a long journey, I know starting all alone, registering a private limited, earning the first amount, hiring the first employee, paying the first salary, hiring a full team and working all day long. It has gone smooth till now, every plan has succeeded and I am happy with it.

AS: What is the current strength of your company? How do you manage these people at such an early age?

KP: I never consider myself as the boss and them as employees. I consider everyone the same and I find myself being the part of that team. In that condition, everything goes smooth and everyone remains confident about his/her contribution in the growth of the company.

AS: Do you hire people from prestigious organisations like IIT and IIM?

KP: I had hired an IIT guy, but most of the IITians do not find it easy to work with an early age start-ups.

AS: As you deal with international clients as well, how are they different from Indian clients?

KP: Most of my clients are from the US and Europe. They are not actually concerned about me, my age and my background. The only thing they need is their work to be completed and in that way, they maintain a very professional standard. That is a great thing and a motivation for a teenager like me.

AS: As you are just 18 years old, you have a long way to go. Where do you see yourself in the next decade or so?

KP: I do not want a hectic life - 60 years of work and then die. I want to retire by 25, and then spend time with my family. However, I do not make long term plans. So I have no idea where will this life will take me. But one thing is for sure, no matter what I do - I work or  retire, I would be enjoying my life the same way I enjoy today.

Why are Poor People Poor?

Why are poor people poor? This is because poor do not know how to get rich. Poor think that making more money can make one rich. But this is not correct. One must attain financial independence first. Only after achievement of financial independence one can start getting richer. The difficult part is achievement of financial independence. Dependency on monthly pay check keeps one poor.

Getting rich is not easy. Its specially difficult for middle class people. When income is limited and expense is sporadic, getting rich becomes tough. More importantly, what is done in day-to-day life is what’s keeps one poor. Poor also works very hard, but continue to stay poor. The main reason is ‘pay check dependency’. This is the root cause. Its because of ones bad habit that he/she continues to live pay check-to-pay check. This way poor people will only continue to be poor. Dependency on pay check must be reduced. This is step one. One must have sufficiently big income generating asset that can maintain one standard of living even when there is no pay check.

Its very interesting to see ones transformation from from being poor to financially independent. There could be several road blocks ahead. But pleasure & excitement of this transformation keeps one going. Imagine yourself trapped in a dark cave for years. Suddenly you see a very thin ray of light and you travel in its direction. You travel with a hope to see clear sky. Financial independence is our clear sky. Slowly-growing-income-from-asset is our ray of light. The more assets one accumulate the closer will be financial independence. And once we reach financial independence, nothing should stop us from “Getting Richer”.

From where we must start our journey to financial independence? The starting point shall be to recognize factors that justifies why are poor people poor. Eliminating these factors should be the immediate priority.

(1) Why are Poor People Poor – Because they Save Less

Yes this is a fact, rich spend less and poor spend more. We actually believe the opposite. Rich actually spends less. Poor people spend beyond their means. Proportionally, rich spend less than poor. If poor earns $20,000, they spend $19,500. While if rich earns $100,000, they spend only $65,000. Percentage savings for poor is only 3%. While rich saves 35%. Irrespective of the fact that rich spends 3.33 times ($65,000 Vs $19,500) of poor, they still save more than poor (35% vs 3%). Higher savings, year after year can make poor get rich. Lower savings is the reason why poor people continue to stay poor. Low saving is common among poor and middle class people. First we overspend, and then make up for these over spending’s by dipping into our savings. We may be saving more than 3%, but we ultimately spend our savings on useless things. This makes our effort to save money go in vain. If savings are not sufficient we use credit cards. How many times it has happened that you bought the latest smart phone from savings or credit card? It happens every two year perhaps. This habit of eroding our savings justifies why are poor people poor. Careful analysis of one’s financial needs is essential. Ones we know our financial needs, we have to save and spend accordingly. Saving and spending planning is called budgeting. Sticking to our budget no matter what comes in life is the key to become rich.

(2) Whey are Poor People Poor – Because they do not Plan for Emergency

Rich people handle emergencies better than poor. No one can forecast emergency, but we can be prepared. At least the money-part can be planned. The thumb rule says, one shall have a emergency fund big enough to manage 3 months expenses. How many of us maintain an emergency fund this big? Rich does it very judiciously. The richer a person is bigger is their emergency fund. I personally have met a person who has more than 8 month worth of emergency fund. If he loose his job, he can still maintain his standard of living without touching his assets. Poor people really fair bad in handling emergencies. Many people maintaining term plan, medical insurance, auto insurance, property insurance etc. In addition to this one must have minimum 3 month worth of emergency fund. This emergency fund is like a liquid-reserves in bank. Poor do not plan like this. Ultimately their savings get eaten up when emergency strikes. Its regular erosion of savings that keeps poor people poor.

(3) Why are Poor People Poor – Because they carry High Debt

Capability of rich people to pay debt is high. But they prefer not to avail debt. This is what poor people must learn from rich. Debt is never good for ones financial independence. On an average, a poor person pays 35-40% of their income to payback debt. This percentage for rich is much lower. Poor overspend by taking loan. Things that they cannot afford, they can buy using debt. This is why these days everything in market can be purchased with EMI. Mobile phones, Television, High value credit card purchases, furniture’s etc everything is available on EMI. But debt is not good, who buys these products on EMI? Rich people do not buy it with debt. But poor people, who cannot afford then buys it with EMI. It has become a habit. When need comes poor people opt for bank-loan. But this is a wrong way to manage requirements. Better option is to pan & save for requirements from before. If we know today that after 15 years, our child will need funds for higher education, start saving from today. People often take education loan to pay for education fees. Pre planning can save us huge amount of money. Debts makes purchasing easy but they are costly. Careful analysis of one’s financial needs is the key. The more we plan less dependent we are on debt.

(4) Why are Poor People Poor – Because they do not follow Financial Independence

Rich people complicatedly makes themselves more financially independent each month. But on other hand poor people does Know the concept. This is one factor that makes a huge difference between rich and poor. Financial independence is the first milestone in becoming rich. Achievement of financial independence takes time. Its better to realize the importance of financial independence as early as possible in life. A rich person of today, started his journey towards financial independence years back. How rich handle income & expense is very interesting. I have represented in a graphical way to elaborate the difference between rich and poor’s way of handle income & expense.

Once the person becomes financially independent, the journey of becoming rich starts. The best part is, a financially independent person gets richer each day. Not only he is able to afford more expenses (luxuries of life) but his personal asset also appreciates. How this happens is represented in the flow chart:

Rich people are matured investors and Poor are Panic Investors. This makes a lot of difference. Lets see few examples what makes poor people bad investors. (a) When rich buy stocks, poor people are selling them. When poor people buy stocks, rich are selling them. (b) Rich buy those stocks which show strong fundamentals. While poor people buy those stocks which everyone else is buying. (c) Rich people buy stocks which are undervalued. Poor people does not know how to value stocks. (d) Rich people invests in real estate property during project launch. Poor people buy second or third resale property which are already expensive. (e) Rich people buy multiple property for rental income. Poor people buy just one property for self occupation. (f) When poor people are taking possession of property, rich people are selling them. (g) Rich regularly buy gold as a inflation hedge. Poor people buy gold only during festival seasons. (h) Rich never keeps free cash. Poor people keeps all saving as cash. (i) Rich buy investments not to use that money for next decade. Poor buys investments and breaks it the next month. The idea is to observe rich and become a matured investor like them.

1. Mahatma Gandhi

His is perhaps the most inspirational tale. Originally a barrister in India by profession, he was not a strong lawyer as he was unable to cross-question his witnesses. Who doesn't know the name Reliance today? But do you know, that Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance was perhaps controversy's favourite child? Ambani had a humble beginning and he was not from an affluent background. He moved to Yemen at 16 years of age where he worked as a simple clerk. However, he knew he had to follow his calling and risking everything, he returned to India to set up his business with his close friend. Though Champaklal Damani differed from Ambani in his views and decided to split, Ambani did not give up hope and continued his trade, deciding to even enter the stock market. His stock market dealings and success have often been questioned but the man rose to power through sheer grit and determination.

What do you do when you have a role model to look up to and then, you are asked to fill the role model's shoes? When Ratan Tata became the chairman in 1991, he had a mammoth task set before him. His futuristic views and liberal attitude did not go well with some of the top honchos at Tata which resulted in a tussle at the management level. At the very start of his career as chairman, two companies under him faced bankruptcy and his employees faith in him dwindled as he brought down the retirement age from 70 to 65, leading to an ouster of some of the oldest employees of the organisation. Despite the many failures he has seen, Tata Nano being the latest, Ratan Tata did not give up and continues to be a global figure even today.

5. Narendra Modi

A humble chai-vendor, embroiled in one of the most blood-bathed controversies in the country is today the Prime Minister. Does success need any other definition? When Modi took on the reigns of Gujarat as the Chief Minister from Keshubhai Patel, his rise was met with opposition from many within the party. Modi's lack of experience was one of the major concerns. However, Modi stood his ground and became Gujarat's CM. As the CM, he veered from RSS's ideologies and supported privatisation and small government. But perhaps, his true test came in the form of the Godhra violence. While many still blame him for the riots, his name was cleared and he went to become one of the most powerful men in the country.

A writer of motivational books, he perhaps needed his words the most when he was accused of plagiarism. Post the launch of one of his books, 'Freedom is Not Free', Shiv Khera was accused by a retired civil servant Amrit Lal of plagiarism. While Shiv Khera was dragged to court, he did not give up and continued his writings. He even defended his writings saying he read a lot of books and researched before writing. Not exactly a failure, but Smriti Irani's tale is definitely a rags to riches with WTF interspersed in between. She got her dream break while waitressing at McDonalds and became one of the best known faces on the small screen playing the role of Tulsi in Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. However, after a fallout with the small screen queen Ekta Kapoor, her career seemed like it would end. But Smriti Irani decided to enter the world of Politics and is today the HRD minister. With no education (or atleast a few fudged degrees) mind you!

8. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi

A cricketer relies on not just his strong reflexes but one of the most important asset is his power to see. A cricketer since childhood, Mansoor Ali Khan pataudi permanently damaged one of his eyes in a road accident. This led to him seeing doubled image. Though he could no longer see clearly, pataudi did not give up. He feared his cricket career was over but he returned to the field to play with just one eye. He is today regarded as one of the greatest captains India has ever had!

9. Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Born to humble farmers in UP, Nawazuddin first worked as a chemist in a petrochemical company. Wanting something more interesting, he moved to Delhi to only be a watchman. He developed an interest in theatre in Delhi and moved to Mumbai to try his luck in movies. However, like every struggler, he did not get any good job or any meaty role and kept appearing in small roles. He resorted to conducting acting work shops to earn some money. After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, “What is this?” The Son said “Father, I have just now told you “It’s a crow”. After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, What is this?” At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the Son’s tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. “It’s a crow, a crow”.A little after, the Father again asked his Son the 4th time, “What is

this?”

This time the Son shouted at his Father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”

A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On opening a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary :-

“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. I did not at all feel irritated I rather felt affection for my innocent child”.

While the little child asked him 23 times “What is this”, the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and when today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed.

So..

If your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient, humble and kind to them. Be considerate to your parents.From today say this aloud, “I want to see my parents happy forever. They have cared for me ever since I was a little child. They have always showered their selfless love on me.

They crossed all mountains and valleys without seeing the storm and heat to make me a person presentable in the society today”. Say a prayer to God, “I will serve my old parents in the BEST way. I will say all good and kind words to my dear parents, no matter how they behave.
